What CRAFT Is – And Why It Changes Everything For Parents Who Have A Child Struggling With Addiction

If you’ve been searching for answers about how to help your child through addiction, you’ve probably run into one of two messages:

  1. You’re powerless. There’s nothing you can do.
  2. The only thing you can do is save yourself and stay in your own lane.

And if you’ve ever pushed back on either of those and thought, “But I don’t want to abandon my child. I want to help.” Chances are someone slapped a label on you. They called it enabling. Maybe they even suggested you were part of the problem.

I know that feeling. I lived it for five years.

CRAFT told me something completely different: not only can you help – you are the most valuable person to help your child. And we will teach you how.

So What Is CRAFT?

CRAFT stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training. It’s a research-based approach that teaches family members how to use their natural relationship and influence to support their loved one’s recovery, without losing themselves in the process.

It was developed by Dr. Robert Meyers and has been studied and validated in clinical research for decades. That last part matters more than it might seem.

The model works on three core tracks simultaneously:

Your child’s behavior.

The goal here is straightforward: reduce substance use and move toward recovery. CRAFT teaches you to use strategic positive reinforcement,  rewarding sober behavior and stepping back from behaviors that support use, not as manipulation, but as a way of tipping the scales toward recovery. You learn to recognize patterns, timing, and how to have conversations that actually open the door to change instead of escalate chaos.

Your own wellbeing.

CRAFT is one of the only approaches that explicitly treats your life as worth improving – not just as a side effect of helping your child, but as a goal in itself. Because a mom who is healthier, calmer, and more grounded is also a more effective influence on the people she loves.

The invitation to treatment.

CRAFT gives you a systematic, compassionate way to open the door to professional help – knowing when to bring it up, how to frame it, and what to do whether your loved one says yes or no.

Why “Evidence-Based” Actually Matters Here

Using tough love by detaching, issuing ultimatums, and cutting off is not evidence-based. There are no studies that show it works. It was built on stigma, fear, and a fundamental misunderstanding of how addiction and family systems actually function.

CRAFT is different. It has been proven to work, over and over again, across multiple studies. It is based on science – not shame.

When I tell the moms I work with this, they feel validated because most of them have been following advice that felt wrong in their gut – and it turns out, their gut was right.

What CRAFT Actually Teaches You

CRAFT doesn’t ask you to give up on your child or pretend you don’t care. It does the opposite. Here’s what it teaches:

  • You deserve to be happy and enjoy your life and that actually helps your child.
  • You can be involved and supportive without losing yourself in their addiction.
  • Your child is a human being who deserves to be loved and treated with dignity, even in the middle of their struggle.

You are not the problem. You are an valuable asset. And there are concrete skills that will help you show up in a way that creates real change – without costing you your health, your peace, or your relationship.

Here’s What It Looked Like in My Own Life

For five years, my daughter’s substance use and the chaos in our lives escalated while my attempts to help through tough love left our relationship strained and broken. I had no influence. She had no interest in recovery. And I felt completely alone with nowhere to turn.

When I found CRAFT, something shifted almost immediately. Not because my daughter magically got better overnight, but because I finally felt validated. I wasn’t powerless. There was something I could actually do. And I no longer had to feel shame for wanting to help my own child.

My health started to improve. My life started to feel good again. And my daughter noticed. She watched me stop shrinking and start living and it sparked something in her. She started to change. She started working on her own recovery.

Finally – something that didn’t make things worse. Something that actually felt good to BOTH of us!

Why I Became a CRAFT-Trained Coach

I became certified as a family recovery coach because I knew I couldn’t be the only mom sitting in this exact spot wanting desperately to help, being told I was the problem, and feeling completely lost.

My program, The Peaceful Mom Group, is built entirely on CRAFT principles, along with Motivational Interviewing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Everything I teach is grounded in what actually works – not outdated, stigma-based approaches that label you for loving your child, but what the research actually shows creates change.

Who This Is For

This is for the mom who…

  • Loves her child fiercely and refuses to apologize for it
  • Has been told to detach, step back, and let her child hit rock bottom and couldn’t make peace with any of it
  • Knows something has to change and is willing to lead the way by starting with herself
  • Wants to stay in relationship with her child without losing who she is
  • Is ready to stop white-knuckling it alone and invest in expert support, a much shorter learning curve, and the power of being around other moms who are actively growing
  • Believes her child is worthy of love, hope, and continued connection while also learning that she is too

Who This Is Not For

This is not the right fit if you…

  • Are looking for reassurance without being asked to grow
  • Want someone to tell you exactly what to do rather than teach you a framework and skills you can always fall back on no matter what your child does next
  • Are hoping for a quick fix or a guaranteed outcome
  • Are not yet ready to look honestly at your own patterns like fear, guilt, and over-responsibility and how they might be keeping you stuck
  • Are waiting for your child to change before allowing yourself to live, heal, or move forward

No judgment if that’s where you are. CRAFT will be here when you’re ready.

Frequently Asked Questions About CRAFT

Isn’t wanting to help just enabling?

No, and this is one of the most damaging myths in the addiction space. Enabling is not black and white. Helping isn’t always hurting, and you can actually enable health, connection, and recovery just as easily as you can enable use. Wanting to help your child is not a character flaw, it’s love, and it’s one of the most human things there is. CRAFT teaches you how to channel that love in ways that actually create positive change.

What if my child doesn’t want help?

That’s exactly who CRAFT was designed for. You don’t need your child to be willing, ready, or even aware you’re doing this work. CRAFT gives you tools to use right now, in your existing relationship, regardless of where your child is in their journey.

Is this just for moms whose kids are in active addiction?

CRAFT is commonly used when someone is still using, but the skills apply across the whole spectrum, including early recovery, relapse, and long-term maintenance. The relationship skills you learn don’t have an expiration date.

How is this different from Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is a valuable peer support community. CRAFT is a skills-based coaching model. They can coexist, but they’re doing different things. Al-Anon focuses on your acceptance and detachment from the outcome. CRAFT focuses on your influence and strategy.

If This Resonates With You

You don’t have to choose between helping your child and helping yourself. You don’t have to go numb or detach to stay sane. And you don’t have to keep following advice that feels wrong because someone with authority handed it to you.

There is another way. A way that’s been studied, validated, and most importantly that actually works to create positive change.

If you’re ready to learn what that looks like for your family, I’d love to talk. Book a Road to Recovery call with me and let’s figure out your next best step together.
